Event Details

Join us for our new Big Read Book Club! Each month, we'll read one of the 12 novels & memoirs the National Endowment for the Arts features as its annual "Big Read" selections. We will meet at 10 am every fourth Saturday to discuss the book; patrons have the option of attending virtually or in person. Coffee and refreshments will be served!

The selection for December 2022 will be the acclaimed 2020 memoir Sitting Pretty by Rebekah Taussig. Born in Manhattan, Kansas, in the mid-1980s, Taussig was 14 months old when she was diagnosed with a malignant cancer that attacked her spine. Two years of intense treatment left her cancer-free but paralyzed from the waist down. As a young girl, she searched for nuanced depictions of disability: stories that captured all the ways disability could be complex and ordinary, uncomfortable and fine, painful and fulfilling. As an adult, she created her own. Taussig’s Sitting Pretty is a “memoir-in-essays” spanning personal stories and family histories, offering a fierce and fabulous revision to entrenched ableist narratives with a spunky, self-aware wit.

Copies will be made available at the library's Circulation Desk. Please sign up below to participate in this month's discussion!
