Long before Scranton Library opened in 1900, people in Madison could rent or borrow books from private libraries like the Farmers’ Library and the East River Reading Room. Henry Griggs will trace the history of local libraries in an illustrated talk that covers the period from 1792 to the present. There will be a special focus on the places that housed the libraries, which Henry Ward Beecher called “one of the necessities of life.”

Henry is Madison’s Municipal Historian. He was a Scranton Trustee for nine years and served on the Town’s Library Expansion Building Committee. He got his first library card in 1965.
