In this fascinating talk, art historian & educator Bernadine Franco will discuss how renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo revolutionized the male-dominated Surrealist Movement with her distinctive personal aesthetic and visual iconography. She will also examine Kahlo’s influence on 20th century female Surrealist painters working in Mexico, including Remedios Varo from Spain and British-born painter and novelist Leonora Carrington. Participants will learn about embedded symbolism and the female experience revealed through the works and practice of these celebrated women artists. An optional free companion tour will take place at the Wadsworth Atheneum on Saturday, Sept. 24th at 4 pm.
