Event Details

In 1647, Alice Young of Windsor, Connecticut became the first person convicted and hanged for witchcraft in the thirteen colonies. Her trial gave way to witchcraft accusations throughout Connecticut and New England. This talk, led by author and historian Beth Caruso, will examine how many people were accused and why, the types of magic people believed in, and what it actually meant to be accused of witchcraft in the 17th century. We will also look at the Hartford Witch Panic and what went wrong in 1662.
