When you think of the Italian Renaissance, you likely think of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Botticelli. Few know how many female painters were active at the time, or how their work helped shape what we now know as the Renaissance aesthetic. In this one-of-a-kind lecture, art historian Jodi Stiffelman will look at the transition in Italian Renaissance art, starting with classic male painters and bringing in women artists who were highly talented but under-recognized, even to this day. This talk will examine works by Raphael, Titian, Sofonisba Anguissola, and Sister Plautilla Nelli, among others. This is a hybrid event; patrons may attend either virtually or in-person.
